Take the fear out of baking and have some fun!
Common complaint: Baking is stressful and too precise, it is too much to handle. (really….have you seen what 2020 has been offering??)
My fix: take a baking class with me and I will make it fun and fearless!!
Prior to becoming a business owner, I spent a decade working in restaurants all over the USA. Before I took the big leap, I rarely stepped out of the box with baking. I was never a big fan of boxed mixes, but a lot of us start with a boxed mix. It is easy, convenient and unfortunately, not a lot of people can differentiate between the box mix and a from scratch cake.
I remember adding a new flavor of chocolate chips to a box of brownies or a box of cake and people were raving about how amazing that was. I kept thinking, but I didn’t do anything that exciting. You can do it too.
As I got a little older, I got a little more experimental with my baking, but stuck with cookies, cookie bars, brownies and cheesecakes. I was intimidated to start something that I never tried and had no one to help me figure out what I was doing wrong so I stayed where I was.
I remember buying books anywhere and everywhere that had anything to do with baking. I learned in Pastry school that these were not the correct books to follow along with. There’s a whole other set of books out there that I had yet to discover.
I never made a pie or baked with yeast until I switched careers and went to Pastry school at the age of 29.
Once I became a business owner and decided to start teaching, I thought the same thing… anyone can do what I do so who knows how this teaching will go.
I gave it a chance and I quickly realized that my students were in the same boat as I was when I started baking as a hobby. I can not only teach them what I have learned as a Chef, but I can also empathize with them because I have been there many many times.
Just because I have 14 years experience, it does not mean that I don’t get intimidated or sometimes overwhelmed to learn something or relearn something. it is perfectly normal and ok.
I constantly have to step out of my comfort zone as a business owner, and as a baker, I am still always learning. To date, I have now taught over 325 classes in less than 3 years, so I once again prove to myself that not only do I have a lot to learn, I have a lot of information to teach as well.
My students smiles, joy and pride are unmatched. I relate to all of their emotions: Fear of the unknown, the stress of a recipe, the science behind the baking and the need to be precise.
What I often remind my students is that baking is patience and practice. We all have it in us to find something new that we can be successful in.
My goal for my students is to always have fun, take off the pressure of a recipe and to make something amazing and delicious.
